This medication is used to treat anxiety. Lorazepam belongs to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines which act on the brain and nerves (central nervous system) to produce a calming effect. This drug works by enhancing the effects of a certain natural chemical in the body (GABA).
The half-life of lorazepam is 12 hours, meaning that it decreases in concentration in the body by half every 12 hours. The drug is metabolized primarily by the liver and then eliminated from the body by the kidneys through urine. Ativan may be present up to nine days past the last use.
Take lorazepam exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Lorazepam oral tablets are available in strengths of 0.5 mg, 1 mg, and 2 mg. Your doctor may prescribe lorazepam to be taken 2 to 3 times a day for conditions such as anxiety, or once daily for conditions such as insomnia.
